Provençale SA offers a range of calcium carbonates used in the composition of foods, medicines and body care products. The products in this range comply with the requirements for food additive E170 as defined in the annex to regulation 231/2012/EC of 9/03/2012.
Nutrition
Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) plays several important roles in human nutrition:
- Essential source of calcium for healthy bones and teeth, muscle contraction and nerve function. It is often used in calcium supplements to prevent or treat calcium deficiencies, such as osteoporosis.
- Natural antacid to relieve symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion.
- Fortifying agent in fortified foods (cereals, dairy products, vegetables) to increase their calcium content.
- Stabilizer and texture agent in various food applications, such as sweets, confectionery and certain bakery products.
- Natural filler that increases the volume of certain food products without adding calories.
- pH neutralizer in food formulations, reducing excessive acidity in certain preparations.
- Beneficial effect on drinking water by increasing hardness and mineral content.
Our calcium carbonates are commonly used as pharmaceutical excipients in the manufacture of tablets and capsules for several reasons:
- As a filler in tablets, CaCO3 can be used to increase tablet or capsule volume without affecting the active properties of the drug.
- Base for chewable tablets thanks to its neutral taste and ability to neutralize acidity.
- Chemical stabilizer contributing to drug stability by preventing undesirable reactions between active ingredients and other excipients.
- pH regulator to ensure the stability of active ingredients or improve their absorption by the body.
- Improved consistency and texture in creams, ointments or suspensions.
- Source of calcium to treat or prevent calcium deficiency in patients.
- Safe, inert excipient, non-toxic and well-tolerated by the body.

Cosmetics
Our calcium carbonates play several important roles in cosmetic formulations:
- Texturing agent and thickener in creams, lotions and other skin care products.
- Colorant and whitening agent in make-up products such as powders and foundations. Its natural whiteness helps even out skin tone and create make-up products with more opaque coverage.
- Sebum absorber in formulations for oily skin. It controls shine and contributes to a matte finish in powders and make-up bases.
- Filler in powder products to increase volume without adding color or odor.
- Stabilizer and suspending agent in liquid and semi-solid cosmetic formulations, preventing phase separation in emulsions and gels.
- pH regulator for cosmetic formulations in an optimal range for the skin.
- In fine particle form, it can be used as a gentle exfoliant
